MY TREE OF LIFE

My 17 word one-minute précis of Terrence Malick’s THE TREE OF LIFE, Palme d’or winner at this year’s Cannes film festival.

  1. Not good, then? I didn't see Thin Red Line until recently. Although friends had said it was stunning I was very let down by the portentous monologues – quite unlike what I understand of the human psychology in extreme conditions (or what my father has told me about landing on the D-Day beaches).

  2. It has its moments, and the music is lovely. But (and many will no doubt disagree) it struck me as being a bit like a two hour+ life insurance ad.

I didn't actively dislike it till the ending, which is complete and utter kitsch.

  3. Just noticed that the way I worded this blog makes it sound as though it was I who won the Palme d'Or at Cannes. So please accept my apologies for any confusion there. It was, of course, Terrence Malick's film that won the Palme d'Or, not mine.
