THE HALLOWE’EN SESSIONS

I’m thrilled to announce I have written my first West End stage-play! or part of an anthology play anyway, alongside a bunch of other, far more talented writers: Kim Newman, Stephen Volk, Maura McHugh, Paul McAuley and Sean Hogan (who will also direct). I feel very proud to be in their company, not least since it’s given us a chance to put the apostrophe back into Hallowe’en.

The Hallowe’en Sessions will run from 29th October to 3rd November at the Leicester Square Theatre in London. Tickets are on sale here. Watch the trailer at the bottom of this page!

“A group of mental patients gather for a therapy session to each recount the terrifying events that caused them to lose their minds. But is their mysterious therapist all she appears to be, and will her course of treatment prove to be kill or cure?

Cigarette Burns and an award-winning team of horror/fantasy creators join forces to bring you a nightmarish evening filled with primal screams. Writers Kim Newman (ANNO DRACULA, MORIARTY: THE HOUND OF THE D’URBERVILLES), Stephen Volk (THE AWAKENING, GHOSTWATCH), Anne Billson (SUCKERS, STIFF LIPS) Paul McAuley (FAIRYLAND, the QUIET WAR trilogy), Maura McHugh (JENNIFER WILDE, ROISIN DUBH) and director Sean Hogan (THE DEVIL’S BUSINESS, LITTLE DEATHS) take you on a head trip through the darkest recesses of the human psyche, where no one – least of all the audience – escapes with their nerves or sanity intact…”

STOP PRESS! Director Sean Hogan announces a cast change:
We must regretfully announce the withdrawal of Pollyanna McIntosh from The Hallowe’en Sessions, due to unavoidable contractual conflicts (blame the BBC, not us). It’s been a joy to work with her up till now, and everyone involved with the show is sorry to see her go, especially at such a late stage.

We are however very pleased to announce that her replacement will be the extremely talented Gina Abolins, most recently seen in The Seasoning House at FrightFest. We’re very grateful to her for taking on the role at such short notice, and rest assured she is as strongly committed to terrifying the audience as her predecessor was.

What can I say? It was a triumph. Or at least everyone told me they enjoyed it, which amounts to the same thing. Holly Lucas (“Marika”) and Daniel Brocklebank (“Richard”) were brilliant in my segment, Case Study: Richard Gill, both times I saw it, so I was very chuffed.

All but a couple of the performances were sold out, and to top it all we got some great reviews. Here they are:

The Quietus
Forbidden Planet International
DIY Film
Seat at the Back
ScreenGeek
John Forth

How thrilling it was to write some stuff and then hear it ACTUALLY COMING OUT OF THE MOUTHS OF ACTORS ON STAGE. A big thank you to the excellent cast (but especially Daniel Brocklebank and Holly Lucas), and also to Sean Hogan, Kim Newman for asking me, Josh Upstart, Cigarette Burns and my other fellow writers Maura McHugh, Stephen Volk and Paul McAuley for making this happen.

Now I’m going to write a really horrible full-length play.
